I was getting this error not due to an out-of-disk-space condition, but
somehow the installation of linux-restricted-modules-2.6.27-11-generic
would not terminate correctly.  I uninstalled this package (apparently I
don't need it, since I haven't observed any adverse consequences), and
the problem went away.  Sort of, I had a separate issue due to my use of
lilo instead of grub, but that's probably not the case for you.
