Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, there is an undocumented feature that enables
you to do what you want: just press SHIFT when you're doing your
selectio. There's a comment about this in the source code:
/* Hold the shift key down to disable the auto-edge snap feature
*/
This should be mentioned in the documentation. I filed a bug in the
