Public bug reported:

On  Toshiba laptops using "Realtec High definition audio codec"  like
the A135 S4527 the following problems occur on Ubuntu 8.10 and other
versions:


1. By default when installed speakers audio is turned off (had to enable it on 
the sound devices by right click on the speaker icon)


2.  Headphones are not producing any audio, does not matter what settings are 
choose.


On othe linux distros this issue is not present.
