Scott, agreed on need to find root cause for this on, particularly as workaround packages does not help me at all. ;-)
I have the same issue with up-to-date Kubuntu/Jaunty on HP n8440 laptop running everything on LVM. I have small /boot (/dev/sda1), the rest of the disk is LVM pvol (/dev/sda2). I have several logical volumes (swap, /, /home, /misc...) I have booted my system with Alternate CD rescue mode and have collected requested info. If you need anything let me know (it may take some time to provide as I have internet only in the reception of the hotel).
