Might be because my laptop only has a single disc and all my systems that use raid have either 8.10 or gentoo on them... Sorry.
As a bonus, I would say this qualifies anyone using raid as I suspected (any device-mapper based storage). @MichaelEvans: Missed /lib/udev/rules.d/65-mdadm.vol_id.rules removing WATCH from that (as well) and regenerating the initrd does enable -8 to boot.
