I think it is extremely erroneous to entirely ignore the expiry token passed via the freedesktop notifications API. The application generating the notification may rely on the expiry to cause important notifications to be less easily missed. Alternatively it may set a longer expiry on longer messages to allow time to read them.
Please strongly consider re-opening this bug.
