Thank you for your bug report. We'll need some more information to be able to reproduce and resolve this issue:
1. Does sound work in any application at all, or is the lack of sound limited to mplayer and rhythmbox? 2. Has sound ever worked for you on this install of Ubuntu, or did something recently change that caused the sound to stop working? If so, what changed at that time? 3. Do you know what model sound card you have? If you don't know the specific model, is it an internal card? USB? etc. 4. Try going to System->Preferences->Sound and see if any sound cards are detected there.
