sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop (or sudo killall gdm), Alt+F2 log in and type: sudo 
apt-get remove --purge gnome-applets gnome-applets-data and install this again,
or
then remove files in /tmp like: all files with the word "gconf" and 
"orbit-yourusername"
or
aptitude search applet, and reinstall every applet:)
or
sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop:)
or something else...
