Sorry for my poor english, i'm french.
I had the same problem and you must change the theme of Ubuntu.
Gnubg doesn't work with clearlock but it's ok with the human theme.

I can play the game normal but the screen are black and I can't see the text
fields.
I only see the buttons and the board.
I can change de board apearance but cna change anymore. Everything are black.
I runnig this on Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 with the last updates.
