I decided to see what happens with a normal install of ubuntu (8.10), with no 
patches.
I installed the nvidia-180-modaliases and had the Restricted Drivers Manager 
give me the nvidia 180 driver option.
After that was done, I rebooted and the login prompt appears.
I get the plain brown background the mouse pointer could be moved briefly 
before it freezes.  It does not drop back to the text prompt, the keyboard does 
not respond and a hard reset is needed.
