I decided to see what happens with a normal install of ubuntu (8.10), with no patches. I installed the nvidia-180-modaliases and had the Restricted Drivers Manager give me the nvidia 180 driver option. After that was done, I rebooted and the login prompt appears. I get the plain brown background the mouse pointer could be moved briefly before it freezes. It does not drop back to the text prompt, the keyboard does not respond and a hard reset is needed.
