Retesting on the most up to date intrepid kernel, it seems I'm wrong
about this being a regression from Intrepid.  The failure mode is a bit
different in Intrepid.  Lock doesn't show up in input-events, but rather
acpi-listen as in the following:

jldug...@jldugger-tablet:~$ acpi_listen 
lhkey VALZ 00000000 0000013b
hkey VALZ 00000001 0000013b

However, according to my wiki page [1], this key worked in Hardy and
earlier.
