At first my machine (Intel Core2 Quad CPU) was perfectly stable since november '08. The machine was up 24/7 and also running 4 instances fold...@home. But when I started to use fold...@home with the -smp switch I got random lockups. The machine is not overclocked and in both cases the machine is under high CPU load, so overheating or other hardware related issues shouldn't be the cause of the lockups. I guess the lockups are related to MPI (which is turned on in fold...@home with -smp switch.)
