** Description changed:

I downloaded the Beta of 8.10 and loaded it as a new install onto a Dell
c400 notebook. The install worked fine all the way up to the
done/reboot. I booted to the Ubuntu build and the system seemed to
begin to load, then just stopped at a "Ubuntu Brown" screen (completely
blank) with the round cursor. I can move the cursor around the screen -
  that is all.

I downloaded a new copy onto a different machine, deleted the partitions
off of the C400 drive, and did a complete new build off of the newly
  downloaded disk.

Same problem occurred. No input from the keybaord is acknowledged, no
errors are reported, no interrupt has effect (disk tray, USB device
etc.). Only way out is hard power off (slam).

I tried to work off the "Live Disk", and that failed too. Stopped at a
black screen with a cursor and nothng would work - had to do a hard
  power off.

  Thanks for taking a look,

+
+ I downloaded XUBUNTU and it works fine. After installing the Xubuntu
+ build, I re-downloaded and installed (regular) Ubuntu from the
+ distribution site. That build still failed in the same way as the
+ reported problem. I re-installed Xubuntu and I have since downloaded
+ numerous updates, installed numerous applications and basically now use
+ the Xubuntu build as my PRIMARY system. The reported problem is related
+ to the native Ubuntu since it does NOT occur with Xubuntu.
