It seems that this problem is due to improper shutdown (halt). If I kill (by pushing the power button for 5 secs) the laptop (HP nx6325) boots up a lot faster (it doesn't waste so much time 'till grub appears) and the battery status is updated. Without "killing" at boot time, there is also an audio problem when plugging in earphones, the speakers are not muted.
