Public bug reported:

This is a regression from Intrepid.

I cannot get audio to work from the Gnome desktop. Audio works at the
login stage (one hears the drum sounds) but after logging in to Gnome
desktop audio does not work.

gnome-volume-control seems to chose the default device as "Playback:
Null Output (PulseAudio Mixer)

alsamixer as a non-sudo user reports the error:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
strace of alsamixer reveals:
- open /dev/snd/controlC0 (EACCESS)
- open /dev/snd/aloadC0 (ENOENT)

I've tried sound playback through gnome-sound-properties with no success using:
Autodetect, all the HDA Intel STAC92xx options, ALSA, OSS and PulseAudio
Sound Server to no avail.

Writing raw audio to /dev/dsp works OK.
