I now have the same issue, Updated from 8.10 ( sound working ) to 9.04.
All packages are latest.
Alsa mixer shows the channels are 100.
Under sound preferences I have no sound from any Test, and when I click
volume control from the panel, device is listed as "Playback: Null
output (Pulse Audio Mixer)"
Rebooting, unloading / reloading Alsa has made no difference.
I do not believe this is a duplicate of bug 299093. That bug was
specific to alsa mixer sound levels resetting to 0, which this does not
seem to be the case. I am no expert, so please ask what information you
would like me to post for you
