I have such problem after an upgrade from elder version of XChat. IRC server I use accepts only "/msg nickserv IDENTIFY password" command. It seems, that XChat sends "/nickserv IDENTIFY password" to server. If server doesn't accept this command alias, authentication fails. In my case, solution is to write "right" command to "Connect command" field in IRC network settings.
