I can confirm that I also get this bug, and that switching to a console
and back undoes the garbling (thanks for the tip).
The graphics card is an nVidia Quadro NVS 285
$ lspci -vv | grep -i nvidia

The system is a Dell precision 490, running ubuntu edgy amd64.
