Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: update-manager
I do now know if my problem is one of the above! I am using Ubuntu 8.10
No matter how I try to download and install upgrades (automatically, via
synaptic, in recovery mode, etc.), I get the following error message:
"Preconfiguring Packages
dpkg: parse error in file '/var/lib/dpkg/available' near line 18588 package
'libgstreamer 0.10.0':
Depends field, missing package name, or garbage where package name is expected
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned error code (2)
A package failed to install. Trying to recover"
I have also tried to fix broken packages in synaptic and in recovery mode. I
also tried from cli:
sudo apt-get -f install and sudo apt-get --fix-missing install as suggested
from the support group - to no avail.
I tried to reinstall libgstreamer 0.10.0 and even that failed with the same
error message above.
I also tried to see if putting my install disk in the disk drive to see if
synaptic could reinstall libgstreamer from it and I beleve that is what
instigated this particular automatic error report. As it is now I cannot
upgrade or add/remove any applications because the system cannot get past the
preconfiguration step an I do not know how to fix it.
I am new to Ubuntu and am very low on the learning curve so I will need
step by step help. I have bookmarked the wiki pages below and I will
study them, but right now I do not understand them.
