Version 1.1.0-4.1build1 doesn't have support for GUIDs. These are unique player IDs that helps managing servers. The support can be added by installing the TJW backport build: http://tremulous.tjw.org/backport/ Many of the servers currently needs the GUID support and since the Ubuntu package doesn't have that the players must compile the game by their selves or download the prebuilded package that isn't in deb- format. The TJW patch is easy to add and there is no downsides. You will still be to play with players who don't have a GUID.
