Public bug reported:

Test configuration :
- Macbook Pro Late 2006 (Core 2 Duo + ATI X1600)
- External screen Dell 2007WFP plugged through DVI
- free radeon driver
- Intrepid 64 bits

Test case :
1. Start Ubuntu with the external screen unplugged
2. Once the session is started, connect the external screen
3. Launch System -> Preferences -> Screen resolution

What works: the screen resolution applet well founds the Dell 20" screen

What don't work: can't set more than 1440*900 (the resolution of the
mac) while the Dell resolution is 1680*1050

Work around: use fglrx and manually hack the xorg.conf.

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
