Ubuntu Heron - that worked, most of the time in the last six months.
None of the previous six months without a custom patched kernel.

Ubuntu Jaunty - linux 2.26.28-8-generic - 100% fail.

stupid Dell chipset (Inspiron 1525) - there's also been continuous
trouble with the Intel 965 graphics chipset.

Even with a working environment, somewhere between 5 and 30% of the time
it fails to connect to a WPA encrypted network. After suspend/resume
that's closer to 80% fail - even in a "working" environment.

Sorry. Not a fix.
