Confirm. I've clashed with very similar symptoms. I use Jaunty with latest updates (something between alpha4 and 5) at Asus Eee PC 901. System boots fine, I log in via gdm, work few minutes (1-5, usually), and after that screen goes black (but keep going glow); possible solution - switch to tty[1-7], blindly log in, and exec: sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop sudo startx In this case after log in via gdm no problems with screen, but environment starts behave very strange - some services(such as automounting of usb devices) just doesn't work.
