I did try the Nvidia 173 driver but it made no difference. I finally
decided to upgrade to 8.10 and that installed the 177 driver. This
finally solved my problem. Here is my new xorg.conf;
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)

** Description changed:
During my upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy (with all current updates) I lost
output from the DVI on my Nvidia Geforce 6600. As soon as X starts, the
screen goes black. The system continues to boot normally. My VGA output
works normally. I am running the Nvidia accelerated driver. If I
disable the the accelerated driver I do get DVI output but an
unacceptable resolution that I can't seem to modify in any way.
Attached is my xorg.conf and xorg.0.log

+ This is now Solved for me by upgrade to 8.10
