A bit more details: 
the 'parent' program that calls 'transcode' is dvd::rip (0.98.6) and the crash 
only happens when transcoding a movie in 'cluster' mode - the two clusters are 
actually running on the same PC and the goal of using clusters is to push the 
program to use both of the CPU cores (as advised in Ubuntu forums). When 
transcoding the movie in normal (non-clustered) mode there is no such crash.
