I've tried all of your suggestions and the results are shown below. There doesn't seem to be anything relevant in /media. I don't know what sdb1 is, but it's there right after boot with no CF card plugged it so it probably isn't relevant to this issue. I checked with lsusb that the CF adapter was recognised before I ran your tests.
