I have a similar situation--SIS VGA, Ubuntu 8.10 32bit.

Some interesting lines from /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

(II) SIS(0): SiS driver (2005/09/20-1, compiled for X.org 1.5.0.0)
(II) SIS(0): Copyright (C) 2001-2005 Thomas Winischhofer
<[email protected]> and others
(II) SIS(0): *** See http://www.winischhofer.at/linuxsisvga.shtml

Is this an old driver? 2005 seems like it was a while ago. Just a
thought. Does anyone have a Xorg.0.log file from 8.04, which seems to
like the sis driver.
