Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Recently I was only to start gnome in failsafe mode (in Jaunty alpha 4),
and I couldn't find any information anywhere that would tell me why it
wouldn't start in normal mode. The .xsession-errors file only had:

/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_AU.
Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to
/etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default.

in it, and I couldn't find any relevant messages in any of the log
files. I also didn't find anything in google that told me how I might
make it display more information, eg put each command into .xsession-
errors so I could find which one was the problem (I'm sure it was due to
one or more corrupted files in my root partition, but I couldn't tell
which one).

I think it would be highly useful to have a session in the gdm selection
list that is 'start Gnome with comprehensive debugging information', as
it would have given me a much better chance of fixing the problem (I
reinstalled Ubuntu from scratch in the end).

** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu)
