I had a very similar problem on my Gateway laptop (M305CRV.) I was installing Drake from the DVD using the "text only" mode. However, my screen does not go blank until the software installation phase (when its about 60% of the way through.) I saw the same two white character positions that you reported.
Also, I find that if I wait long enough, the DVD will pop out, signalling the end of the installation. The OS seems to be working fine, as far as I can tell, but there may be packages missing that I am not aware of.
