Public bug reported:

I use Ubuntu 8.10 on a Lenovo X60T Laptop

Since I updated from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10, I can hear the fan cyclically
changing in speed without any reason. I use Gnome with 2-3 applications
running (1-5% CPU usage) and without the need for higher power, the fan
speed increases rapidly and slows down again with a period of 5 seconds.
Before I ran ubuntu 8.10, did not hear the fan running except the
running applications need the processor power extensively.

So I expected to have a silent fan running at constant speed and I now
have a fan, which runs to fast and is very loud.
