My comments above were for the 2.6.28-7-generic kernel which works for me. With 2.6.28-8-generic my machine freezes either shortly before the login screen appears or up to 3 seconds after. Sometimes I can move the mouse on the login screen before it freezes, but no cursor afterwards and any existing ssh connection is lost. dbus and hal do start at the recovery console and hal-device reports the mouse. After a freeze and reboot, the Xorg.0.log is zero in size. Only /var/log/auth.log and /var/log/udev have been written to in /var/log. This has been the case for me for a few weeks now - I think since 2.6.28-8-24 arrived. 5 yr old MSI K7N2 nForce2 motherboard.
