Public bug reported:

Running in dualboot: Ubuntu 8.10(up to date) and Mac OS X

on a: Macbook 3,1

Bug: Total video crash resulting in a non-usable graphical state because
of the BLUR plugin in COMPIZ.

Steps to reproduce:

1) open Compiz settings manager
2) enable plugin "Blur Windows" (or "Motion Blur")

And with a little luck your screen will look like a Win95 scrambled
glitch and no way out. Apparently it's a video card issue. I've had this
issue once before, a long time ago (was new to Linux, so I didn't file a
report at the time) with the same config.

HOW TO FIX:

This method worked for me, as I practiced it on a Guest session. You'll have to
do this "blindfolded".
After a fresh reboot, press ALT+F2 (may have to press the fn key since its a
Macbook) and after a few seconds
type

 //     gnome-terminal

and press "Enter"
theoretically, a Terminal should come up, and that's where you type

//      metacity --replace

this should switch Compiz to Metacity. From there on, you should be able
to open the Compiz manager and disable the "Blur Windows" plugin.

Restart and never enable it again...
