Adding a comment here generates a "this bug is a duplicate" warning -
but it doesn't say what this bug duplicates! I've spent 15 minutes or so
searching for the bug it duplicates to no avail, so:

This is still a bug in Ubuntu 8.04, as of 3 March 2009. I have been
doing everything I can think of to copy a partition to unallocated
space on my USB drive, but each time I make the attempt, the source
drive is remounted and gparted refuses to copy it, informing me that the
failure is due to the fact that the source drive is mounted. I am at a
loss as to the true source of the error, as was the original poster.

The work-around suggested by Rocko in 2006 no longer works in 2009:
"Removable Drives and Media" no longer controls the auto-mounting of USB
drives.
