Not enough info to being troubleshooting this issue. We need some sort of error message - look in /var/log/gdm/*, /var/log/Xorg.0.log[.old], dmesg, or /var/log/syslog and see if you can find some sort of indication of an error.
Are you able to reproduce this issue on Jaunty?
