Binary package hint: hal-0.5.11-4ubuntu4 (intrepid)

I had the same Problem here:
hald[6200]: segfault at 0 ip 0806702b sp bf8deec0 error 4 in hald[8048000+52000]
in /var/log/messages.

This only happened while the system was booting, restarting hald with
"/etc/init.d/hal restart" afterwards worked without it crashing again.

For me, it turned out to have happened after issueing "update-pciids" as root
(with umask 0007) on my machine.
Because update-pciids wrote /usr/share/misc/pci.ids with permissions 660
instead of 644 and thus not giving read permissions to hald running as user
haldaemon.

Try "sudo chmod 644 /usr/share/misc/pci.ids" and see if it helps.

I'm not shure if it's entirely update-pciids fault or my unusual umask settings
for the root user.
Anyways i think hald could have handled this a bit more graceful and not by
segfaulting.
