I just thought I would update you after the conclusion was drawn that the bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/315791 was a duplicate of this bug. This might be jumping the gun, but as I can't get Hardy or Intrepid to work correctly I thought I would try Jaunty. LTSP and remote x windows still don't work, but when I look at the .xession-errors file it is full of strange indecipherable characters rather that the usual information. It has been about 6 months now since LTSP functioned correctly and I am really hoping that Jaunty won't be the third version in a row not to work.
