This is happening to me too.

I used apt-get to remove all of totem and gstreamer plugins
Then I did apt-get clean and ran totem. 
The media player prompted me to install the various codecs that I needed ... 
the instant they were installed I got a segmentation fault.

Attached is the valgrind report

I created it using:
valgrind -v totem 2>>valgrind.log >>valgrind.log
