lspci | grep Display
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML
Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

The display on this machine is shifted downwards about 50 pixels - there
is a black bar at the top of the screen, and the bottom few pixels are
lost off the bottom of the screen.

I tried xvidtune, but every set of parameters I tried it told me they
weren't supported.

According to xvidtune the ModeLine being used by the X server is:
1024x600 47.60 1024 1040 1045 1285 600 603 608 635

>From what I can tell, this is wrong. I took the following from a
Mandriva install on the same machine, where the display is correctly
placed:

    ModeLine "1024x600_60" 48.96 1024 1064 1168 1312 600 601 604 622
-HSync +Vsync

Which gives a perfectly positioned display with a refresh rate of 60Hz.
Under Kubuntu, KDE is reporting the refresh rate as 58.3Hz.

I tried putting the above ModeLine in my xorg.conf on Kubuntu, but X
just ignores it.

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
