I have the same problem: plasma will not start at all. I tried the above workaround, removing all mentions of geometry in /usr/share/kubuntu-default-settings/kde4-profile/default/share/config /plasma-appletsrc and from ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc as well. This did not help. I also tried removing ~/.kde/share/config/plasma- appletsrc alltogether but still no luck.
