I have just experienced this problem with Mythbuntu 8.10, in which it is
a race condition between the startup of the LCDd and mythlcdserver
processes. The proposed change simply improves the odds of LCDd
starting first, and I can confirm that it does work. But a proper
solution would be to have the upstream mythtv maintainers fix
mythlcdserver so that if it happens to start first, it will periodically
retry its connection to LCDd until successful.
