I doubt that. How come a command-line copy would go much faster than using gvfs then? At least that's how the original bug was reported.
Top that with the hundred comments in various directions saying that $FOO kernel version/option doesn't make a difference, and that this is replicable on dozens of different hardware configurations, it seems pretty dangerous to me to throw away the gnome thesis.
