I have the same issue. I saw it trying to install a 500 MB application specific to the company I work for. I ALSO got an "out of disk space" message in Nautilus while trying to copy 4GB (20,000 files or so) from my old home directory into my NEW home directory.
All of this was attempted on jaunty Alpha 5 using an ext4 root file system. I too used df -h to confirm that i still had plenty of disk space free.
