my solution: i did edit /etc/apt sources.list and changed 'hoary' to
'intrepid', then did apt-get dist-upgrade. have not had the problem
since.

and no, its probably not reproducable unless you have the same laptop
that I do.

the bug is that 'failsafe' should be failsafe, IE, there should be some
stripped down window manager that you can use so that you arent totally
locked out of your computer. whatever 'failsafe gnome' is, it is not
very failsafe, as it doesnt even provide an option to show a log of what
it is doing, or at what stage it freezes.
