When using ATI cards with 3D games and the 8.28.8 driver the memory usage grows huge until the game/application crashes. I have tested it with an ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 (I reached a memory consumption of 2.8GB before the game crashed: 1GB RAM + 1.8GB swap). But it seems to be a known problem. Check for example: http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=405580&forum=72 The easiest way to reproduce is running Cube 2 (Sauerbraten) and after a couple of minutes the systems goes really slow and start to use the swap. With NeverWinter Nights it takes around 1 hour, probably because the use of textures is not so heavy. So I had to migrate to the Mesa 3D drivers and DRI which even in normal situation performs much better. I would suggest to include the Mesa 3D drivers with DRI as an option during Ubuntu installation, specially for those having ATI cards not supported by the latest ATI drivers.
