If you update the driver running the live CD, you must restart X afterwards. The simplest way is to log out and in again. You can also switch to a virtual console with ctrl-alt-F1, then run "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop" to stop X. Then you can edit /etc/xorg.conf if needed or whatever, and run X with "startx". Or you can restart gdm with "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start". But startx will not activate "failsafeX" if something goes wrong, so it can be less confusing than gdm.
