The patch you mentioned I have applied (bug 335116). I have printed to an HP LaserJet 1020 without paper now and no 100% CPU consumption at all.
Seems that you got the paperless office to work correctly now :-) Note that your patch for bug 335116 is applied to my copy of HPLIP.
