Probably shouldn't be posting this on LauchPad, but It seemed appropriate since
it involved the /dev/video0 creation as well for Logitech QuickCam Chat
webcam...
and I figured that chiming in on the thread might help in working on the
current problem.

I'm _also_ having problems with Logitech QuickCam Chat webcam... problems with
Ubuntu recognizing it, and Ubuntu not being able to use it.
    I could use the cam on XP, but XP doesn't recognize
    the IXP AC'97 audio chips, whereas Ubuntu's ALSA
    drivers work perfectly with the "local" chipsets.
Back on topic --
camorama error - "could not connect to video device (/dev/video0)"

Have four USBs. in one open USB port, lsusb shows --
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 046d:08af Logitech, Inc.
and in the other open USB port, lsusb shows --
Bus 001 Device 008: ID 046d:08af Logitech, Inc.

So Ubuntu might not be the problem... but there is no /dev/video or /dev/video0
created.
Checked Synaptic - gspca-source _is_ installed, but there still is do
/dev/video0.
That is at the Ubuntu level, I believe.

Okay, I am a new LaunchPad poster.
What _else_ do you need to know to help deduce where _my_ problem is?

My CPU is an AMD64. I'm running Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-16-generic.

Further complication (maybe OT, I am only an intermediate user of Ubuntu) -
In installing Skype (hoping that it would work "out of the box", automagically),
Skype required that it be installed with -force-architecture (or whatever the
option was) under Gutsy, which installed the i386 32-bit version onto my
AMD64 Ubuntu, and then "whined" about

  ldd /usr/bin/skype | grep not
          libXss.so.1 => not found
          libQtDBus.so.4 => not found
          libQtGui.so.4 => not found
          libQtNetwork.so.4 => not found
          libQtCore.so.4 => not found

so, I was instructed (via the web page on installing Skype onto Ubuntu 7.10)
to install the 32-bit libraries in question for Skype and copy them to /lib32/.

In doing so, have I lost any AMD64 matching libs (Xss,DBus,GUI,Network,Core)
...
just in case something else that was using the AMD64 versions are still looking
to use the AMD64 versions... native architecture/forced architecture.

Hmm... I am finding new areas to learn more about Ubuntu, and Debian,
and Linux.

Thank you intensely for the help.
