The behavior as described above is still the same on * Ubuntu intrepid 8.10 english and * Thunderbird 2.0.0.19 (20090105) (and this happens on various machines on different installations !!) .. Just try it.
After Alt-Tab, no more numbers are taken (until ALT is pressed again) * neither from the full-sized keyboard (numbers above the letter keys) nor from the num-pad. I am composing messages as HTML, but the same behavior occurs when composing as text. So, this is not a big issue, but it is not a normal behavior.
