so a config-script didn't run fully and you don't have the rights to access to /dev/null. Mainly other inid-scripts also fails.
do the following after you arrived in the error message on the X-Screen go to a console with Ctrl+Alt+F(1..6) and log in. there you also will receive a lot of error messages because of /dev/null. type in: sudo chmod a+rw /dev/null sudo /etc/init.d/networking (because this will also fail) then go to the X-Screen with Ctrl+Alt+F7 and restart X and there go to the synaptic packet-manager and continue the update.
