Just had a user in ubuntu-uk with this issue.
Ubuntu 8.10
Desktop Computer - installed from LiveCD.
Running:
pulseaudio -k
pulseaudio -D
Gave him sound back (don't know for how long though).
His aplay -l outbut is below:
aplay -l
